Personality: When Skye first is taken in by Agent Coulson after she has left enough traces for SHIELD to find her, she does not trust them in any way. While she is interrogated and later joins the team, she expertly hides her real intentions: finding out about her birth parents, which she otherwise has not been able to accomplish even with her expert hacking skills. As Ward and Coulson question her she is able to project a cool exterior even when she is truthfully not used to the situation in the least, using snide remarks and jokes to hide her fear, a tactic which she keeps on using even after she has truly become a part of the team.

Generally, Skye does not have anyone she really cares about when we first meet her and no family, since she has been passed from foster home to foster home at SHIELD’s insistence – a fact she did not know growing up. Instead she always felt unwanted everywhere she went, which made her reluctant to enter meaningful relationships with other people, always afraid that they would send her away one day as well. The longer she stays with Coulson’s team, however, the more she starts to care about the friends she made there, feeling like she has a family for the first time. As Coulson tells her later, SHIELD has always taken care of her from afar. She learns about having been found amidst a massacre in a Chinese village, something that might have broken most people, but which she takes in stride, as she finally knows after a life of wondering where she came from and why she was brought to the orphanage.

The name given to her at the orphanage was Mary Sue Poots, a name she (understandably) doesn’t use, instead going by the chosen name of Skye, which suits her self-image much better. Skye is confident in her abilities, both as a hacker and later on as a member of Coulson’s team. This confidence leads her to act reckless at times, especially when she is convinced she is doing the right thing or that she is the only one who can solve the problem. The latter nearly got her killed when she infiltrated Ian Quinn’s house on her own with only an ICER to defend herself because she didn’t want Quinn to get away again. She was shot in the stomach by Quinn twice and only survived because she was given GH-325, a substance that enhances cell regeneration, was extracted from the body of a Kree and is thus alien in origin. While this deeply disturbed Phil Coulson, who had been subjected to the same treatment when he was killed in action before, Skye is unfazed by it. Instead she is happy that both of them are alive, no matter how they accomplished it.

Skye is also very stubborn which can be seen when she – despite still recovering from her gunshot wounds – insists on helping to locate Ward using her computer skills or when she – although she is not authorised to – searches the SHIELD database at the Hub to gather intel on the mission Fitz and Ward were sent on because she feels the information they receive because of their security clearance is insufficient. What also becomes apparent in situations such as these, is that Skye both cares deeply about her teammates, would do anything to support or protect them and that she does not really believe in strictly following the rules or obeying orders, especially when she is convinced that they are faulty. She is the opposite of a soldier in this regard.

However, she is also shown to be able to use this disobedience to her advantage when Victoria Hand throws her off the plane and she has to work alone, but is actually able to accomplish a lot more off the grid, the way she has worked when she was still a Hacktivist. During the ensuing search for Coulson she embarks on, Skye shows how resourceful she is, how well she is able to think on her feet and how much she already has learned while staying on the Bus. She imitates Melinda May as best as she can to intimidate the man she needs information from. Despite not actually being a SHIELD agent yet, she manages to bluff her way through the operation by using her tracking bracelet that disables her from any unauthorized online activities to convince the man she is with SHIELD.

Once she has found Coulson she punches Raina, who has held him captive and forced him to relive the operations performed on him after his death, which shows that she doesn’t shy away from violence when someone important to her is in danger or suffers. At first it doesn’t look like Coulson recognizes her, but when he does she bursts into tears as she is prone to when relieved that a beloved person is safe. This also displays how caring and compassionate Skye is and how much she loves Coulson. She even views him as a father figure and gives him a nickname (AC, short for Agent Coulson), which she doesn’t for any of the others. He being especially close to her also becomes clear early on when even during her “alone time” – when she sits inside their SUV with only her laptop – he is the sole member of the team to be allowed to join her. As she puts it: “There is always room for AC.” A personality trait that interestingly further links her to Coulson, who collects Captain America trading cards, is her interest in superheroes such as the Avengers, which goes to the extent that she is mentioned to have cosplayed in front of Stark Tower - “one time” as she insists.

Skye doesn’t trust easily, but once she does her trust is deep and unwavering, which makes Ward’s betrayal even more painful for her. As her first S.O. she always looked to him for guidance, a role that May later takes over. Before she learned he was really working for Hydra she was starting to fall in love with him and has kissed him when she was sure they would not make it out alive. Even early on, when she had just started staying at the Bus, she showed interest in him, suggesting to go for drinks sometime, seeking him out to talk to him or looking at him in the nude with Backscatter Glasses she was given by Fitz to read Ward’s cards in a game of poker, while she was not interested in seeking Fitz naked. The latter example also shows that she is not ashamed of being sexually interested in someone and not easily embarrassed.

Due to their similar ages and originally non-field based areas of expertise, Skye starts bonding with Fitz and Simmons right from the start. As she lived in her van for the two years prior to joining SHIELD and the changing foster homes throughout her youth, it can be assumed that she never had close friends, let alone a best friend. Both Fitz and Simmons serve as those to her, though, and she is shown to be equally worried about both of them – for example when Simmons is infected with a Chitauri virus and when Fitz suffers from brain damage after nearly drowning. Their relationship is not without their specific troubles, though, as Skye hates to feel excluded because Fitz and Simmons talk science, which she – as a high school dropout – cannot contribute to and often not even fully understand. She also is shown to feel envious of Simmons and Fitz being celebrated stars at the SHIELD Academy of Science and Technology. Their remark that the branch of the Academy Skye would have attended, Communications, is the easiest to get into is met by a sarcastic “Thanks” from Skye, which illustrates that she doesn’t want to be looked down upon and would like to be treated as their equal.

[The video feed clicks on, showing the face of a young Asian-looking woman. She looks upset and breathes heavily, like she has been running and just stopped to make a video post.]
Hello? Can anyone hear me? [She checks the watch’s buttons again, just to make sure she has everything running smoothly.]

Coulson? May? Jemma? Tripp? [With every name on her list her voice grows just a little bit more desperate.] Please. Answer if you hear this, ASAP. I … I have no idea where I am. I already tried calling, but … there is no reception at all. And also no Wi-Fi!

[She takes a couple of deep breaths, eyeing her surroundings once more.] It seems to be a deserted town. The buildings aren’t 20th or 21st century as far as I can tell. A train dropped me off but there isn’t one leaving.

Coulson? I … Just answer, please. [She seems to try and stay strong, but still looks freaked out as she ends the video feed.]
